Lincoln History Uncovered
Through the years of housing renovations in Lincoln Village, we have discovered many interesting items that speak to the history of this area. Within the last month, we have uncovered a few in one of our most recent projects.
While we have seen similar items in other houses, we have never had a house that was created with a “cellar” area beneath the original structure. Notice there is a coal burning fireplace — you can tell the house was built with this space in mind.
We would love for someone to be able to tell us the purpose of this room. Keep in mind these houses were built circa 1915-1930… Some of the ideas that have been tossed around – though not all would match up with construction dates:
- A “speak-easy” during prohibition.
- A nuclear “fall out” shelter.
- Part of the Underground Railroad.
- A storm shelter.

Lincoln Village Ministry | Huntsville AL
Just a few miles from the most expensive houses in the inner city of Huntsville were men, women, and children surviving without the basic necessities. No running water or electricity. Plumbing didn’t work and floors were rotted from leaking pipes. Children had broken toys and went to bed hungry. A man with a heart for this inner city neighborhood stepped into the home of a little girl and her mother. That visit opened the man’s eyes and eventually a community’s eyes to the great need in their midst: the need for Christ.
Lincoln Village Ministries is the product of one man’s call to action. The call has spread all over the city of Huntsville to pour out the hope and love of Jesus Christ into the Lincoln community.
